Chapter Twelve

“Don’t move,” X said under his breath. “Don’t even breathe.”

He moved slowly, circling until we were back to back at the center of the threat. The biggest of the wolves broke through the trees. My pulse skipped. He was red-eyed. A Tyrannous Alpha.

“X,” I said. “He’s…”

“Quiet,” he commanded.

Another wolf broke the line. This one too had the red eyes of a Tyrannous. They wouldn’t stop. Mad with bloodlust, they wouldn’t care if they lived or died. They would only care that they got to me.

“I can’t shift,” I said. “I can’t fight.”

The collar chafed my neck.

“Just stay close to me,” he said.

Three more wolves charged through the woods. Their eyes were still yellow. But it was of small comfort as one of them leapt through the air and tried to claw at me.

X pushed me behind him. He shifted in one fluid movement, slicing open the belly of the wolf as he flew through the air.

I ducked to my knees, out of the line of fire.

The wolf’s blood poured out of him. All around us, the others got closer, drawn by the smell. Those that hadn’t already turned Tyrannous soon would.

There were too many. Not even an Alpha as powerful as X could fight them all off by himself.

Two more wolves broke through. X dispatched them. But these were the dumb ones. The weakest. My more cunning enemies would lie in wait. They would let the others come at X one by one until they’d worn him down. Then…they would strike.

“Let me fight!” I shouted. My wolf strained inside of me. The collar choked me. I pulled at it. It grew almost molten beneath my touch.

“Get back to the house!” X commanded.

But they’d come for me there. The only shifters strong enough to fight were George and Jerome. Betas, they’d make easy pickings. That was if they were lucky. In the more likely scenario, one of these Tyrannous Alphas would subjugate them both into their pack. I wouldn’t do it. I would rather die here than risk another shifter’s fate.

Another of the smaller wolves emerged to my right. He landed on my back, knocking the wind out of me. He was strong. But even collared, I was stronger. I bucked and shoved him off me.

Springing to my feet, I readied for another blow.

X got there first. With the snap of his jaws, he shredded this wolf’s jugular. Blood sprayed all over me.

Another wolf came. Then another. They began to pour out of the woods, no longer waiting one by one.

“X!” I shouted. “Let me fight! You can’t do this by yourself.”

He fought. Roared. Bled.

Deep gashes cut through his back. His chest. His legs. Made by other shifters, those wounds would scar him for life. If he managed to survive at all.

The wolves pushed me back. Wedging themselves between X and me. It had been their play all along.

My God. With this fucking collar on, I would be mostly defenseless against them. If they didn’t end up killing X tonight, I’d do it myself.
